Material Tension

A 3 track leftfield/idm ep (12m 19s) — released November 19th 2021 on Heald Recordings

'Material Tension' consists of two tracks, opening with a string quartet arrangement of 'Object Recognition'. Recorded in Will's studio based in a church in South London, the track's intro serves as a way of familiarising the listener to the melodic motif of the A side, which then proceeds to be ripped apart and synthesized in Lister's signature production style, set over thumping drums and distorted vocals. Dubstep-influenced reverse sub basslines are laid over the top of recorded bass guitar samples, adorned with swirling hi-hats and ominous glassy pads to create a transient sonic whirlpool.

The B side, Maelstrom, is built of modular blips and percussion, riding over a blown-out drum loop. Rhythmic stabs and acoustic drum fills spill over the beat, leading us to a dark, sub heavy, cavernous space. The darkness is broken up by the occasional melancholic pad, which leads to dominate the track towards the end set over a rolling UKG-inspired beat, before falling apart back into the darkness.
